The novel tells the story of a romantic love that develops between Lygia, a Christian woman and barbarian hostage, and Marcus Vinicius, a young Roman patrician. It takes place in the city of Rome under the rule of Roman emperor Nero, from c. AD 64 to AD 68, when he committed suicide.
