Michel Leiris was a poet, novelist and ethnographer. After leaving the Surrealist group, he was associated with Jean-Paul Sartre and Georges Bataille. Leiris acquired his enthusiasm for bullfighting (a life-long passion) with Bataille, Andre Masson and Pablo Picasso.
